Grandma Allie’s Detox Salad

Over the weekend my mom made a detoxifying salad that was too good not to share with you. She whipped up this pungent beauty for the first time decades ago. She thought it would be great to eat in preparation for the juice fast reboot she is going to begin soon.

Allie’s Detox Salad
Ingredients:
Parsley, washed and rough chopped
1 Onion, julienned
5+ Garlic cloves, chopped
4 cans of pickled Artichoke hearts, quartered
Vinegar
Cold pressed Olive Oil
Red pepper flakes
1 lemon

Directions: Combine parsley, onions, garlic and artichokes. My mom eyeballs pretty much everything she makes; she never uses a recipe. Therefore we do not have exact measurements for the vinegar and oil. Drizzle a tablespoon or so of the vinegar and oil and mix, toss a pinch or two of red pepper flakes in, depending on your heat tolerance, and squeeze some fresh lemon juice over the salad before devouring.

Eat salad as is or serve over a bed of greens.

One tip: Do not eat this salad before a date night. Holy overpowering.

Why is this salad so great for you?

Parsley is wonderful at flushing out the toxins in your kidneys and your kidneys flush toxins out from your body. Therefore, parsley helps the overall cleansing of the toxins from your body.

Onions offer many health benefits including cardiovascular benefits, healthy support for bone and connective tissues, anti-inflammatory benefits and cancer prevention. It is recommended to eat at least one half of an onion each day to receive this allium vegetable’s benefits.

Garlic is found to be exceptionally wonderful at helping cleanse out the digestive system as well, not to mention it tastes GREAT. It is known to be a powerful antibiotic as well and therefore will help treat infections. Garlic has also been found to be helpful at reducing blood pressure, cholesterol levels and blood clotting.

Artichokes benefit our digestive system by increasing the bile production in our large intestine. They also help remove excess water and toxins from our bodies. Other benefits: They lower triglycerides, they are a good source of fiber, potassium, iron, calcium and phosphorus.

White vinegar helps the body absorb essential minerals. Acetic acid that is found in vinegar is said (not proven) to balance the digestive system by slowing the absorption food high in refined carbs. Vinegar is also linked to reducing high blood pressure, aiding in cancer prevention and also helps people with type 2 diabetes by inactivating digestive enzymes that break foods down into sugar.

Olive oil is wonderful for many reasons, but regarding digestion it lowers the risk of acid reflux, and promotes absorption of many nutrients. It is also known to help aid constipation by having a mild laxative effect on the bowels.

Red pepper flakes are rich in antioxidants, boosts metabolism, kills bacteria that cause stomach ulcers and cancer and clears congestion.

Lemons not only offer an energy boost, but also offer digestive system support, immune system support and also fight bacteria.
